 Abstract: The lecture is based on Professor Mares’s new book (currently under review), which investigates electoral reforms constraining intimidation and vote-buying. Which political and economic factors account for political actors’ support for legislation protecting electoral secrecy, and how have these laws affect the development of political parties – are the questions of the book.

Isabela Mares is a Professor of Political Science at Columbia University. Her research interest has covered comparative social policy & political economy, including the development of social insurance institutions, the impact of wage bargaining on economic outcomes, and social policy reform in developing countries. Her previous monographs are: The Politics of Social Risk: Business and Welfare State Development, Cambridge University Press 2003 (winner of the Gregory Luebbert Award of the APSA for the best book in comparative politics), and Taxation, Wage Bargaining and Unemployment, Cambridge University Press 2006.
