Anxiety is a common thread through academic life.  Learning and creating new ideas induces stress, both excitement and fear.  In this talk, you will learn the evolutionary roots of the mechanisms that regulate the flight or fight response and, oddly enough, dramatically alter cognitive function and memory.  You will learn to recognize the symptoms of anxiety in yourself and others.  You will understand why your brain does what it does when you are stressed and the origins of some of your secret stress coping mechanisms that you think no one knows about.  Finally, you will learn a variety of stress management techniques that can help you both when you are freaking out in the middle of an exam and when you are working hard at home.
