Considered ‘the final frontier’ and acknowledged as ‘the fifth domain’, cyberspace and the issue of securing it have come to the foreground of international debates as a number of ‘high-profile’ attacks have been launched on states (e.g. Estonia, Georgia), private actors (e.g. Operation Aurora, Night Dragon), and critical infrastructure (e.g. Stuxnet) around the world over the last decade. In spite of its prominence in the policy-making circles, cyber security has remained on the periphery of security studies, and has only recently become subject to scholarly attention. The presentation will focus on the existing theoretical approaches towards the topic, and the possibility for their advancement in the context of recent developments within the field of cyber security.
