Varieties of Regionalisation: The Impact of State Regionalism on Economic Regionalisation in the EU and the ASEAN

The project explores whether different types and intensity of regional integration schemes, notably the EU and the ASEAN, are conducive to similar or different outcomes in firm regionalisation. It is argued that by examining the varied ways trans-national corporations organise their production and back-office activities within different regional regulatory environments provides insights into how regional integration schemes are able to influence economic integration within their fold, and can highlight intra-regional linkages which are not detected by traditional indicators. While the primary aim is to contribute to comparative regionalism, it is also contended that by better understanding the importance economic actors attribute to political regionalism can add to the ‘globalisation vs. regionalisations’ debate.
