EGN’s Graduate Network Conference comes to CEU

March 29, 2016

PhD candidates from eight leading European universities come together at CEU for this year’s Graduate Network Conference, held in early April in Budapest. The annual meeting of the European Graduate Network will comprise of eight conference panels, where close to 50 young researchers present and discuss their works in the fields of political science, international relation and public policy. The keynote lecture of the conference will be delivered by Professor Kerem Öktem (University of Graz) on academic freedom in Turkey.

Graduate Network Conference (GNC) comes to CEU for the second time since the foundation of the European Graduate Network (EGN), the collaborative project of eight leading European universities. The project’s annual conference is designed to facilitate the cooperation of graduate students in sociology and political science; this year the conference will be held in Budapest on 6-8 April, jointly organized by CEU’s Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations, and the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS), Vienna.

The keynote lecture of the conference will be delivered by Professor Kerem Öktem from the University of Graz, with the title: “Time of monsters? Geographies of fear in Europe and its borderlands”. In his lecture, Professor Öktem will explore the synchronicity of state failure in the Middle East, rising right-wing racism in Europe and Turkey's authoritarian turn, and will examine in particular the case of academic freedom in Turkey, and its impact on the long-term goal of an open society.

The eight thematic panels of the conference will be chaired by faculty members of CEU and the partner universities. The panels will be organized around the themes of “social movements”, “migration”, “European Union”, “formal representation”, political economy”, “political theory”, “public policy” and “international relations”.

The GNC conference panels last throughout two days, ensuring that sufficient amount of time is spent on each presented research paper. At the 2016 conference each participant’s paper will be discussed throughout one hour: this is one of the main distinctive features of the GNC conference when compared to the other graduate conferences.

The 2016 conference, co-hosted by CEU and IHS, will be held at CEU’s central campus in downtown Budapest, in the Faculty Tower, the Monument building and the Nador 11 building. The conference is open for the public, but is tied to registration at http://goo.gl/forms/iUxu6fx0Ks. Registered audience is asked to specify the panel that they wish to attend.
