10th Annual Doctoral Conference!

Our graduate conference has been organized at CEU every year since 2006, providing opportunity to PhD students from CEU and partner institutions to present and discuss their research papers, test their ideas, while gaining valuable feedback from first class discussants.

In 2015 the ADC features keynote lectures by Isabela Mares (Columbia University, New York) and Mark Hallerberg (Hertie School of Governance, Berlin), alongide with a book launch session and thirteen conference panels on various topics.

The event is hosted by the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy, and International Relations at CEU.

The ADC lasts two days, on Monday and Tuesday,  20-21 April 2015.

Panel sessions and other events are held each day in four time slots, in three different rooms in CEU's Monument Building.

Panel compositions

Most panel sessions have four panelists (PhD candidates) and a discussant (a faculty member or invited professor).  Panels are 1,5 hours long, during which the four panelists present their research papers, and discuss it with the panel's discussant and the audiance.

Conference papers

The abstracts of submitted conference papers are available on this website, on the left side of the page, where abstracts are listed alphabetically, in pdf format. Please click on any of the listed abstracts to read the summary of the presented papers.

The full research papers presented at the conference are available for registered participants and upon request. The papers are uploaded to a document-sharing platform, where participants of the conference can read or download them. To request access to the full papers, please send an email to ds@ceu.edu, and register to the conference as audience.

Special features of the 2015 ADC

(1) Thirteen panel sessions

The conference hosts more than a dozen panel session during the two-day program, with topics ranging from great power politics to healthcare and education, from corruption to political behavior. Many of the panels bring together PhD candidates from different tracks within the Doctoral School. Panel discussants include several guest speakers and renowned visiting scholars in addition to CEU's own faculty members.

(2) Guest panelists from partner institutions

This year the participation of PhD students from partner universities around Europe was encouraged by the Doctoral School, resulting in research proposals submitted from 22 institutions, from 17 different countries. After the anonymous selection procedure, some of these external applicants also participate in the panels, bringing new ideas and networking potentials to the conference.

(3) Two keynote lectures

The highlights of the 2015 ADC will be the two keynote lectures presented by our guest speakers:

“The Political Economy of Financial Crises: Who Pays, and When?”
by Mark HALLERBERG,  professor at the Hertie School of Governance, Berlin

“The Erosion of Democratic Practices in Contemporary East European Elections”
by Isabela MARES, professor Columbia University, New York

Participation at the ADC 2015

(1) Submission of proposals

Sumitting a proposal to the ADC is a mandatory program requirement for PhD candidates of the Doctoral Program of Political Science at CEU. In 2015 applications were open to PhD candidates of any university in the wider region.  The deadline for submitting proposals (abstracts) was 14 February 2015.

(2) Evaluation of proposals

Abstracts submitted to CEU were evaluated anonymously by a selection committee. All received applications received a code, and were evaluated based on their quality and whether they would fit into any of the temathical conference panels. Admitted and rejected applicants both received a notification from the Doctoral School about the acceptance or rejection of their proposal. Applicants whose proposals were not accepted for any panels are offered the opportunity to "table" their papers at the conference. This means that their submitted papers are distributed on the conference website and in hard copy at the conference.

(3) Submission of research paper

Those PhD candidates who were accepted to one of the panels are required to submit their full paper to the Doctoral School by:

(4) Audience

The Annual Doctoral Conference is a public event, but members of the audience are kindly asked to register in advance.  Interested visitors can register by sending an email to ds@ceu.hu, stating their full name, institutional affiliation and position, and the panel sessions / lectures they wish to attend.
